Announce Black Stars bonus structure before 2021 Africa Cup of Nations kick off - Abbey Pobee tells Sports Ministry
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ghanaian football administrator, Abbey Pobee, has implored the Sports Ministry led by Mustapha Ussif, to settle issues with regards to the Black Stars structure before the start of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations start next year.  Ghana have been handed a Group C draw alongside Morocco, Gabon and Comoros. In the past, there has been agitations between the team and the management of the Black Stars over bonuses affecting the country at major tournaments. But Abbey Pobee is calling for an early look into the amount to be paid as bonus to the players. "The new Sports Minister is aware of issues with regards to bonuses, per diem and appearance fees. It ruined our team during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil which called for the establishment of an ad-hoc committee," he told Kumasi based Hello FM. "Unfortunately, none of the Sports Ministers has made use of the committee's recommendations. I think the Minister should let us know if the players will be paid $5,000 or the old $10,000 as a winning bonus, then again will they be given an appearance fee? He should let us know if he'll make use of what is in the white paper. "Due to the problems, the county has faced about the payment of bonuses I always urge every President to make Ghanaians know his plans about that to avert future occurrences. "The President should have a Special Assistant for Sports. We all know about what happened when the $25 billion budget for AFCON and World Cup qualifiers was presented in a breakfast meeting among the stakeholders. That meeting was interestingly chaired by the President. "The President should sit up on the bonus structure issues of the Black Stars." Read the full article

What will investigators be looking for?
The two “black boxes” – the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, are likely to be recovered and analysed swiftly.
The air crash investigators will be looking at every possible aspect: weather, mechanical problems, and whether any criminal act was involved either by someone on the aircraft or elsewhere.
The fact that Addis Ababa is a high-altitude airport, above 7,500ft, will be taken into account.
Flight path: the intended link between Addis Ababa (ADD) and Nairobi (NBO), also showing the approximate crash site at Bishoftu (HAHM) (Great Circle Mapper)
What about the plane involved?
The Boeing 737, in terms of sheer numbers built, is the most successful aircraft of all time. The plane has an excellent safety record overall.
This particular aircraft, registration number ET-AVJ, was only four months old.
It was the most up-to-date MAX variant, the same as was involved in a Lion Air crash in October shortly after take-off from Jakarta airport in Indonesia with the loss of 189 lives.
What is different about the MAX variant?
Its engines are higher and further forward on the wing than earlier models. That shift has some aerodynamic consequences, so Boeing uses “Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System” software to increase safety.
If sensors detect a high “angle of attack” – the angle between the wing and the airflow – that could potentially cause the aircraft to stall, the software will automatically nudge the nose downwards, even if the pilots are flying manually rather than on autopilot.
Could the two crashes be connected?
Watch more
Initial investigations into the Indonesian accident suggest pilots may have been struggling to overcome a nose-down deployment.
Shortly after the Indonesian accident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive describing a possible problem whereby if an incorrect “angle of attack” reading is received by the flight control system, it will respond by tilting the nose downwards.
This, said the FAA, “could cause the flight crew to have difficulty controlling the airplane, and lead to excessive nose-down attitude, significant altitude loss, and possible impact with terrain”.
It remains to be seen whether this latest tragedy will raise similar questions.
Who flies the 737 MAX?
More than 350 have been delivered to airlines around the world, with the biggest fleets belonging to Southwest and American of the US, and Air Canada. Ryanair, Europe’s biggest budget airline, has ordered 135 but none have been delivered yet.
Around 5,000 more are on order. Airlines are attracted by the improved fuel efficiency on an aircraft type that has proven to be popular with passengers.
How is Ethiopian Airlines regarded in aviation circles?
The airline is Africa’s leading carrier, with a well-run and profitable network and a good safety record. The Independent reported a year ago: “If you want to fly on the continent’s best airline, with the world’s most modern aircraft, then it has to be Ethiopian.
“During traumas from famine to revolution, the airline has managed to deliver those two elusive qualities: customer service and profit.”
The business model is to connect Africa with Europe, North America and Asia, and to provide high-quality links through its hub in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopian Airlines’ maintenance standards are well regarded. It operates one of the most technologically advanced aircraft in the world, the Airbus A350, on the link between Heathrow and Addis Ababa.
It has recently expanded in the UK with a link from Manchester to the Ethiopian capital.
What about its safety record?
Compared with some other African airlines, Ethiopian has a good record. But since its foundation in 1945, Ethiopian Airlines has suffered a number of accidents and hijackings.
The worst event in recent decades was the hijacking of a Boeing 767 in 1996, when the aircraft ran out of fuel and ditched near a beach in the Comoro Islands.
An Ethiopian Airlines 737 also crashed shortly after take-off from Beirut in 1990 with the loss of 90 lives.

One in ten girls in sub-Saharan Africa miss school during their period
In countries around the world, menstrual hygiene and inadequate sanitation facilities are causing girls to miss classes. Across Africa, a 2016 study by Human Rights Watch estimated that one in ten African girls missed school during menstruation. Yet many countries in the region are still not doing enough to address the issue, with a distinct lack of effort towards providing single-sex toilets. With late enrolment, many girls reach the end of primary school well into their puberty. Yet, our latest Gender Review found that only 9 of 44 countries with data had single-sex facilities provided in over 75% of primary schools. In Benin and the Comoros, only 4% of schools provided access to single-sex toilets.
Tumblr media
In some cases, the story hits the news, with devastating stories of children falling into pit latrines in South Africa, schools being closed altogether due to poor hygiene in Uganda or students being shamed by their teachers for menstruating in India.
A simple obvious change could involve providing free menstrual hygiene products as New York is planning to do. This idea is also being rolled out by the AAP government in New Delhi and the ShePad scheme in Kerala, covering 300 schools. Since 2011, the Kenyan government has also been budgeting about $3 million per year to distribute free sanitary pads in schools in low-income communities. In the United Kingdom, protests about “period poverty” started at the end of last year when reports emerged of girls in Leeds missing school because they couldn’t afford menstrual hygiene products.
Some forms of accountability can help make sure adequate sanitation facilities are provided as well. For example, regulations requiring separate toilet facilities for boys and girls can help. Yet an analysis of regulations in 71 education systems by the 2017/8 GEM Report showed that only 61% of them required sex-separate facilities in public schools and 66% in private schools. Much more must be done to advance equality to grant girls the dignity they deserve.
Tumblr media
Yet, even regulations alone are not sufficient to ensure facilities are available. Although separate sanitation facilities are written into laws in Bangladesh, a survey found that 41% of girls aged between 11 and 17 were missing three days of school every month because of a lack of adequate sanitary care, including a lack of waste bins, soap and water. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch also found that girls in Haiti were going home to change the materials they used to manage their menstruation, resulting in them missing school.
School inspections can help make sure that schools adhere to regulations. However, inspections do not always consider gender issues as was the case in Bangladesh, for example, where sex-separate sanitation facilities are only occasionally evaluated.
We considered waiting until May 28th to launch this blog, which is Menstrual Hygiene Day. But periods come once a month, not once a year. The blind eye being paid to menstruation is what is enabling it to continue being a barrier to girls’ rights, including to education.

70 million children get no education, says report
Almost 70 million children across the world are prevented from going to school each day, a study published today reveals. Those living in north-eastern Africa are the least likely to receive a good education – or any education at all, an umbrella body of charities and teaching unions known as the Global Campaign for Education has found. It ranks the world's poorest countries according to their education systems. Somalia has the least functional system in the world with just 10% of children going to primary school, while Eritrea is second worst. Haiti, Comoros and Ethiopia fare almost as badly. Before Haiti's earthquake this year, just 50% of children went to primary school. Now that figure is said to have fallen. Some 2.5 million children were left without a school to go to after the earthquake.
The report's authors, from charities including Plan and ActionAid, measured the likelihood of children attending primary school, a country's political will to improve its education system, and the quality of its schools to create the rankings. The study – Back to School? The Worst Places in the World – warns that attempts to ensure all children can attend school are under severe threat. By 2015, there will be more children out of school than there are today, unless the richest countries dramatically increase the aid they give to the poorest nations, the authors argue.
"Poor countries are on a worsening trajectory, as severe and deepening pressure from the economic downturn caused by the crisis of the rich world's banking system bites on their budgets," David Archer, one of the authors from ActionAid says. Some £2.9bn is expected to be lost to education budgets in sub-Saharan Africa because of the economic crisis, he warns. Kenya, which is rated in the 50 worst countries for education, delayed plans to provide a free primary school education to 8.3 million children in September. The global economic crisis was one reason given for this.
Girls are far less likely to attend school than boys in many of the world's poorest countries, the authors have found. In Malawi, of those that enrol, 22.3% of boys complete primary compared to 13.8% of girls. In rural Burkina Faso, 61% of girls are married by the age of 18 and over 85% never get to see the inside of a secondary school. Most rich countries have failed to keep their promises to help poor countries improve their education systems, according to the study. While the UK fares relatively well, along with the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland and Ireland, others – such as Greece, Austria, Italy and Germany – are not giving nearly as much as they should.
The report argues that the International Monetary Fund "severely restricts" poor countries' chances of investing in education, while the World Bank has overseen a "dramatic withdrawal of education funds from low-income countries, especially in Africa".

AU study: COVID-19 could cost Africa $500 billion, damage tourism and aviation sectors
Kingsley Ighobor
About the author: is a public information officer for the United Nations, New York. He is the managing editor at the Africa Renewal.
Up to 20 million jobs in the formal and informal sectors in Africa could be lost because of COVID-19, according to a new study by the African Union.Released in early April, the study found that foreign direct investment (FDI), tourism receipts and remittance flows will also suffer significant declines as the continent tackles the pandemic.
Titled The Impact of Coronavirus on the African Economy, the study modelled two scenarios, each with equal chance of being realized. Under scenario one (realistic), the pandemic will be contained within five months, inflicting minimal damage; under scenario two, the pandemic will last for eight months and countries will be severely affected.
The more optimistic scenario one projects a 2020 GDP growth of -08% while the pessimistic scenario two will result in -1.1% growth. Given that the continent’s 2020 GDP growth had been projected at 3.4%, even the optimistic scenario is a significant decline of 4.18% while the pessimistic scenario projects a decline of 4.51%.
The negative growth would be due to a “disruption of the world economy through global value chains, the abrupt fall in commodity prices and fiscal revenues and the enforcement of travel and social restrictions.”
Furthermore, a 35% dip in exports and imports would be worth $270 billion. Yet, Africa will require $130 billion to “fight against the spread of the virus and medical treatment,” stated the African Union.
Drop in oil prices
Africa will lose between 20% and 30% of its fiscal revenue, which was 500 billion in 2019, forcing governments to resort to borrowing to meet the shortfall. Commodity-dependent countries such as Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria, and the Republic of the Congo will be most affected.
The slump in oil price to below $30 a barrel, and a nosedive of the tourism and air transport sectors, will upend countries’ development agendas.
The tourism and oil sectors represent 25% of the GDPs of Africa’s top five economies—Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco. The study emphasized that, “The level of the impact of COVID-19 on these five economies will be representative for the whole of the African economy.” Oil constitutes 90% of Nigeria’s exports and 70% of its national budget, meaning that any dip in price will have an impact on earnings. Both Nigeria and Angola, Africa’s top two oil producers, could lose up to $65 billion in income.
Effects on tourism
In South Africa, the COVID-19 pandemic threatens the countries’ main sources of income—mining and tourism. With 10.47 million arrivals in 2018, the country was second only to Egypt in tourism receipts, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. Overall, tourism contributed $194.2 billion or 8.5% to Africa’s GDP in 2018.
Tourism in Morocco will take a hit too, along with its automotive industry, which represented 6% of the country’s GDP in 2019.
The study mentioned that, “Tourism employs more than a million people in each of the following countries: Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania. … and more than 20 per cent of total employment in Seychelles, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Mauritius.” Already, Africa’s tourism and aviation sectors are reeling from the impact of COVID-19 with hotels laying off workers and travel agencies shutting down.
“Under the average [realistic] scenario, the tourism and travel sectors in Africa could lose at least $50 billion… and at least two million direct and indirect jobs.”
Top African airlines, including Ethiopian Airlines, EgyptAir, Kenya Airways and South African Airways, will be affected by travel restrictions across the world.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Africa’s air transport industry contributes up to $55.8 billion (2.6%) to Africa’s GDP and supports 6.2 million jobs. By 11 March, African airlines had lost $4.4 billion in revenue due to fallout from the pandemic.
Drop in FDI
The study estimated a drop of between -5% and -15% in FDI in Africa. Data published in 2019 by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) lists Africa’s top five FDI countries: South Africa ($5.3 billion), Egypt ($6.8 billion), Republic of the Congo (4.3 billion), Morocco ($3.6 billion) and Ethiopia ($ 3.3 billion). In total Africa received $46 billion.
Remittance flows are also expected to decrease, crunching cash in many economies. “Remittances range as high as 23% in Lesotho and more than 12% in Comoros, The Gambia, and Liberia,” the study stated.
With advanced economies in recession, official development assistance (ODA), which many African countries rely on to finance development, will come in trickles, if at all. COVID-19 will likely affect the launch of a free trade that was set to begin in July 2020 under the African Continental Free Trade Area. Total Africa trade for 2019 was $760 billion or 29% of the continent’s GDP. Of that amount, intra-Africa trade was just 17%.

Geothermal Energy’s Bright Future: Rashad Naqaweh and GAFO Energy NZ
GAFO Energy NZ Limited
In 2007, GAFO Energy NZ Limited started working in the energy sector. The company’s important projects are in geothermal energy sector. Born in Syria and having a net worth of over 217 million pounds, Dr. Rashad Naqaweh is the CEO of GAFO Energy NZ Limited.
He is also the chairman of GAFO Capital Group.
GAFO Energy NZ Limited believes that innovative strategies need to be developed to achieve growth in future for an optimistic and noble cause. The main focus of GAFO Energy NZ Limited is not just to set up energy factories all over the world, but to use renewable energy sources in order to design a better future for everyone.
By reducing non-renewable energy sources which are quickly depleting, GAFO Energy NZ Limited wants to make sure that the future generations live a healthy and prosperous life.
Projects of GAFO Energy NZ Limited
To expand and spread the network of geothermal energy projects in Europe and meet the growing demands of the population, GAFO Energy NZ Limited has come up with several new plans. The estimated budget of these projects is 2 billion Euros.
The management officials of the company have always worked tirelessly to achieve new targets by using their knowledge, experience and skills. Currently, they are working with the Kenyan Government to establish a 500 Megawatt (Mw) geothermal energy project. The projected budget for this project is 1.3 billion Euros.
In 2009, GAFO Energy NZ Limited in collaboration with the Comorian Government decided to establish a 25 MW geothermal power plant which was located in Ngazidja, Comoros. The total cost of this geothermal energy project was an estimated 120 million Euros. Seeing the hard work and efforts of GAFO Energy NZ Limited, now, the Comorian Government is again interested in working with the energy company.
Discussions are being held to establish a new 10 Megawatt Hydro-electric power plant. However, no comments have been made on the details or projected cost of this new project.
Presently, GAFO Energy NZ Limited is working on energy projects in some countries of Europe and Africa. Some of these countries include Tanzania, Kenya and Union of the Comoros. The management officials of GAFO Energy NZ Limited have once again won the hearts of the people residing in these countries through hard work and extra effort.
To reduce the dependency on diesel-powered energy, GAFO Energy NZ Limited is investing 120 million Euros to establish geothermal energy projects across the Union of the Comoros. These renewable energy projects will be extremely beneficial to the local residents.
Taking an extra step ahead, GAFO Energy NZ Limited is partnering with some leading organizations and countries from all over the world in order to provide clean and cheap energy to its customers. Presently, countries and organizations like Federal Islamic Republic of Comoros and Republic of Kenya are the main partners of GAFO Energy NZ Limited. GAFO Energy NZ Limited is actively working with the Kenyan Government to generate 5000 MW power by 2030. GAFO Energy NZ Limited is expected to supply more than 500 MW in the next five years.
Tanzania is a country which has a vast potential of using geothermal energy to produce electricity. The country has discovered 50 potential locations for producing 5000 MW of geothermal power. Currently, GAFO Energy NZ Limited is working with the Tanzanian Government to start exploring the high potential regions for producing geothermal power. These areas include the Eastern coastal belt, the Southern Zone with Mbeya and Rukwa regions, and the Northern Zone comprising Mara, Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions.
Electricity is quite expensive in East Africa. In Somalia, the rate of one kilowatt of electricity is approximately one dollar per hour. This cost is ten times more than in the United States and five times more than in Kenya. In 1991, the collapse of the central government completely destroyed Somalia’s energy sector. The people residing there had to use private diesel generators, but those who could not afford these generators had to live without electricity.
The Somalian Government invited GAFO Energy NZ Limited to start discovering renewable energy sources so that the residents of the city could get cheaper and better quality electricity. It has been planned to generate 2000 MW in 20 years.
Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is renewable, reliable and sustainable.
It produces less pollution than non-renewable energy sources.
To heat buildings or spin turbines, heat energy is used from the Earth, normally from hydrothermal circulation, hot springs or magma conduits. The reason why this geothermal energy is considered reliable is because the earth has more than 1000 joules of heat energy.
This energy naturally travels to the surface and the conduction rate is 44.2 TW (terawatts). The present energy consumption of all the humans combined is half of this value. However, this diffused energy can only be obtained at lower costs from only some specific areas.
In some specific locations, such as Indonesia, Iceland, and other areas where geothermal activity is at its peak, it is a cheap way of generating electricity and reducing dependency on coal and fossil fuels. Countries such as Costa Rica, Iceland, the Philippines, Kenya and El Salvador are using geothermal sources to generate more than 15 % of their electricity.
It has become very important to minimize coal and fossil fuels to generate electricity and move towards renewable energy sources. Apart from reducing the ever-growing threat of climate change, renewable energy projects can produce electricity that is cheap and affordable.
Furthermore, the processes are also more efficient.
The demand of alternative energy is increasing and clean and reliable energy sources like geothermal are needed on a massive scale to work towards a better future.
